Perennials

Perennials are the fastest growing segment of the bedding plant industry and Palisade Greenhouse is continuing to expand its line of perennials for 2008 with more new varieties. A well-designed perennial garden can provide an entire season of colorful blooming plants and then return again next year with even greater and more abundant color! With over 600 cultivars to select from, we're sure to have what your customers want! We also continue to expand our selection of "Plant Select" varieties. Plant Select LogoWatch for the "PS" symbol in our catalog. Our perennials are grown locally and adapted to our extreme, Colorado climate. Most come supplied with descriptive picture tags, some are sown in rotating crops for later season blooming and all are a great value for the money. A well-cared for perennial plant may provide years of pleasure.
Our perennials are generally available in #1 pots, 1801 flats and the new Versa Plug 3801 flat. The 1801 flats contain 18 individual square pots/cells with one plant per pot in most cases. Along with the #1, these can be sold individually for retail sales.  (Visit our Versa Plug page for more details about these versatile plugs.) For shipping purposes, the #1 pots are transported on our trucks in flats that hold six pots. You may mix varieties of perennials in a flat of six #1 pots, but we would appreciate your total order being placed in multiples of six if at all possible to maximize shipping space on our trucks.
The 1801 flat may not be mixed.

 WHAT IS A PERENNIAL?
The term "perennial" is intended to mean repeated or recurrent growth within the limits of the species and climate zones.  Some varieties will not withstand winter extremes without covering or mulching, nor may they be able to withstand open, dry, winter conditions. The performance of each plant may be subject to a number of variables such as: soil condition, fertilizer amounts applied, watering, sunlight, elevation and temperature extremes. These factors may impact plant growth, blooming season and number of blooms. All of our #1 and 3801 perennials are intended for bloom the first season with just a few exceptions, but our 1801 perennials may not do so. Please discuss this with our Sales office or growers if not clear. Our catalog is intended for planning purposes only. The information provided is taken from a number of reliable sources and also includes our own growing experience and feedback from our customers. This information should not be construed as a guarantee of plant performance.
DID YOU KNOW? There is a general "rule of thumb" called the "Bioclimatic Law" that states that for every 400 foot increase in elevation, bloom is delayed by 4 days? Click here to learn more detail.

ORDERING TIPS
We try to ship our perennials in either the "bud" or "bloom" stage, but some varieties cannot be successfully shipped in full bloom. These include: Delphinium, Garden phlox, Digitalis, Meadow Rue, Lupine, and a few others. We can only guarantee their condition if they are shipped prior to bloom stage. We also have heat sensitive varieties that tend to go into dormancy once it warms up here in the Grand Valley. These plants need to be shipped to higher elevations earlier in the season to ensure they remain in bloom stage. They include: Delphinium, Columbine, Creeping Phlox, Cerastium, Dianthus, Iris, Linum, Lupine, Myosotis and all Poppy varieties.

HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A CERTAIN PERENNIAL?
The perennials sold by Palisade Greenhouse are listed in our catalog by scientific or botanical name. Since many customers may not be familiar with those names and may only know a common name, we have created a list that helps you locate the botanical name if you know the common name. That list is located at the beginning of the Perennial section of our catalog if you have received one or you may view this list either as an Excel spreadsheet or as an Adobe PDF file. Click on either of the links below.

NEED SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO PLANT A PERENNIAL GARDEN?
We also maintain a three page document that provides Planting Tips for our numerous perennials. This list is also found near the beginning of the Perennial section of our catalog if you have received one, or you may click on either of the links below to view as either a Microsoft Word document or an Adobe PDF file.

PERENNIAL PRICING
Our #1 perennials are priced in a "four-tiered" system shown by the letters A,B,C, or D on the price sheets. This is necessary because of the variations we experience in the production costs associated with each species. In some cases, there is more than one pricing tier for cultivars within a certain species such as Hosta or Hemerocallis. Please refer to our "Price List Clarification for Perennials" mailed out with each catalog.
